Come on! Pull your head in Hewitt

Are doing a hand puppet show which involves having a discussion with an emu
-
Are an ancient Egyptian
- Are an unloved tennis player who often talks to the same hand they’ve long had sexual relations with.
Anyway the “vicht” salute isn’t even Lleyton’s. The rights were actually held by former Swedish players Matts Wilander (someone whose compusure and sportsmanship Hewitt can learn from) and Niclas Kroon who let the trademark lapse. It is also used by other sportsmen like Grant Hackett (an Aussie sportsman in the true sense of the word) and Adelaide Crows defender Andrew McLeod as well as millions of other people who happen to have an arm, hand and wrist.
There’s a sense of irony that Hewitt wants to potentially have legal ownwership over something McLeod does. The former mates actually faced each other in court after McLeod accused Hewitt of misleading conduct over a DVD made about the trip made to the northern territory. McLeod claims Hewitt tried cashing in with the footage about the trip, which was meant to about McLeod taking high profile people on journey’s of discovery to the Territory.
The trip included visits to areas that are generally non-accessable to non-indigenous people and Aboriginal communities - why McLeod would want to take Hewitt to Aboriginal communities is anyone’s guess. God knows some of these people suffer enough.
I’m not being too harsh when I say Hewitt is unpopular. The only reason anyone supports him during the Australian Open is because he’s Australian anf there’s no one else with the potential to win grand slams. We loved Pat Rafter not just because he was an Aussie champion but because he is a decent bloke.
But ask most Australians who they most preferred, Hewitt, Federer, Baghtadis or any sub 100 seed player from Eastern Europe whose name they can’t pronounce and you’ll find that Hewitt will come at the bottom of the list. Even Mark Philippoussis has more personality than the fading Adelaide-born star.

Why do people (Australian people that is) hate Hewitt so much? What’s he done wrong, apart from being ultra competitive and and a great Davis Cup player, to warrant such unpopularity? I couldn’t care less about the hand gesture thing, I just like the way he plays.
By the way, I think Baghtadis might have lost a lot of fans in the last 24 hours. I can’t wait to see his crazy ‘mates’ at the match against Hewitt tonight. Maybe Lleyton should take some capsicum spray, just in case.
BTW 2: McLeod was the main cause of that dispute, or at least his wife was!

Ray, the pity for Hewitt is that he has most of the attributes necessary to be a revered Aussies sportsman: heart, tenacity, a wildly competitive streak, skill (obviously). But the problem is that he’s also:
1. Appalling in defeat.
2. Far too aggressive for a largely genteel game like tennis.
3. Been seen to be a racist.
4. About as handsome as a hatful of unwashed quoits.
Granted, the last one he can’t help; but he’s done himself no favours in the other three areas (and that’s a subjective list that’s by no means exhaustive).
The second point is an interesting one. Compare the way Marat Saffin and Lleyton Hewitt fire themselves up on court. Both styles are aggressive, but Saffin rarely appears to be taking things out on his opponent (by way of obnoxious pointing and staring) or the crowd (ditto).
Saffin’s aggression is directed at himself and/or his long-suffering racquets, and as such doesn’t tend to offend people. Hewitt is the complete opposite, and hoards of people have turned off him for this reason (among several others).

It’s hard to pinpoint what it is with Lleyton, but you can’t ignore the fact that so many people dislike him.
I had a laugh tonight after his loss at the Aus Open when the tennis reporter on the 11pm 3AW news bulletin referred to him as “South Australian Lleyton Hewitt”. Aussie when he wins, Crow Eater when he loses.

Ant, I agree with point 4 in that ‘he’s no oil painting’, but if handsomeness (I’ve never used that word before, is it one?) were a prerequisite to public acceptance and adoration of sportspeople, then how do you explain:
Adam Goodes (Sydney AFL club), Jason Gillespie (cricket), Michael Klim (swimming - he looks like an alien) and Craig ‘popeye’ Parry (golf)?
As for points 1, 2 & 3, well …. he’s from Adelaide, what the hell do you expect?
Anyway, I like Lleyton. Anyone who calls an umpire a “spastic” - and gets away with it - is OK by me.

I don’t understand how bitter this writer is. I cannot find a logic reason to hate Lleyton. What? because of a C¿ommon? or a hand sign?
It’s just silly. He’s turned into the people that’s easy to hate and everyone likes to hate. But the guy is a very hard working tenance, persistent person. I bet none of those haters could stand a day if you had to deal with so many hate against you as he has. I don’t think most of the haters have even been able to fulfill their dreams and fight for it.
Lleyton is a character and Australian press is obsessed on putting him down. In my country we’ll be proud to have an athlete like him.
